A carer is someone who, without payment, provides help and support to a friend, neighbour or relative who could not manage otherwise because of frailty, illness or disability.  This may include helping with personal care, medication, cooking, shopping, housework and giving emotional support.


Carers can be:

Male or Female any age from any ethnic, religious or racial background and of any sexual orientationin part-time or full-time employment. They are parents, grandparents, children, partners, friends or neighbours doing what needs to be done to maintain the quality of life for those they are looking after. They may not realise that support is available to help them in their caring role.


The practice is constantly updating our Carers register.  Ask for our Carers' Lead who can offer advice and support, information, referral to Sunderland Carers' Centre and annual carers' health checks


Sunderland Carers Centre offers a confidential information, advice and support service to carers throughout the City of Sunderland. They are open Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm or out of office hours by appointment.

Young Carers

We want to get better at communicating with our patients. We want to make sure you can read and understand the information we send you.

If you find it hard to read our letters or if you need someone to support you at appointments, please let us know.

We want to know if you need information in braille, large print or easy read. We want to know if you need a British Sign Language interpreter or advocate.

We want to know if we can support you to lip-read or use a hearing aid or communication tool.
